Treatise on The Effects of Iron on Elves

02-08-2002 12:52 AM
Finrandel

This is the effect of iron on the skin of elves ass Keiru Emerald, Cobalt and I have discussed, with some additions from myself.

Iron is harmful to elves. That much is one-hundred percent certain. Iron is a banal metal, and elves are magical in and of themselves. However, the more fair and noble an elf is, the more iron can affect them. This ranges from blinding pain, blisters, and scars to discomforting pain that is treatable. Most elves, averagely fair and noble, feel strong pains that are very distracting, sort of like medium strength acids on the skin... kind of imperceptable at first, but it can burn the skin and if contact is prolonged, can scar and cause extreme pain.

Til'Sylvanna is both extremely fair and extremely noble. In this respect, iron is like the black plague... she is not friendly handling iron. Saeth is almost as bad, since he is VERY noble, and a bit less fair. Nelcar is about averagely fair and noble, as is Finrandel.

Half-elves and quarter elves, the rare few that exist, are also slightly affected by iron. It mostly just causes discomfort, like giving the touching body part the prickly feeling similar to your leg falling asleep, then waking up again. Obviously, half-elves feel it more so than quarter elves, and the degree is based upon the nobility and fairness of the elven parent.

Question:

How precisely is the nobility and fairness of John Q. Aelf determined?

Naturally, we'd seek out bloodlines for nobility, but fairness is most obviously a matter of opinion. Also, as magical sentients in and of themselves, would not a particularly aptly magical elf be affected as well, though they may not be particularly noble or fair in the general eye? Of course, I'm not expecting some kind of equation, but such a generalization is bewildering.

All elves are magical... so there's not really one more magically gifted elf than another.

It's all really up the the writter to decide how fair they are. But, noblilty is determined by your Salurion blood, and your cast in society.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I should shrink it, but I also like people to see the detail. I'll shrink it when I have absolutely nothing else ta do.

Anyways, it's been a while since I've done a detailed pencil drawing. This is another pic of Orocia from that one post where she's playing with her dagger and thinking about death and slowly going psycho and... hee hee. ^___^

Hope you like! I wanted to work on my detail and perspective in this one.

*drools* man you drawings are... awesome

I envy your talent, how long have you been drawing?

Posted by Orocia Agua on 12-14-2001 08:45 PM

Wink

Well, I'm assuming you're asking that question to everyone that's posted their artwork here...

I've been drawing since 2 or 3, my pops says I used to draw on the walls (which I don't remember). But I remember drawing up to 4, and I drew pretty well (for a little kid! heh, I wasn't a mini Michaelangela).. I started off drawing my family and my dogs, and cupids and hearts and flowers and horsies and bunny wabbits and shiny happy suns and green grass and trees and oceans and sailboats and butterflies!! And Looney Tunes! When I was 7, I got obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog (and video games) and since I wanted to draw him, I began to hone my mad skillz by buying the American comic books and learning "monkey see, monkey do" style. *grin* I could now draw anthropomorphic characters, and I could draw people but they looked like the people from Tiny Toons. In 5th grade, I got into Street Fighter, and I fell in love with Ryu, Ken, Cammy, and Chun Li, so I began to draw people more realistically, and then from Street Fighter I went into anime b/c of the SF2 anime movie. Also by this time I was a big fangirl (into comics) so I loved reading SpiderMan, Batman, Witchblade, and Gen 13 ( I love J. Scott Campbell's style!) and I also got into manga (and anime, but I've always preferred comics) such as [Sailor Moon for a year or 2 (7th-8th grade), Macross, then Masamune Shirow's work (Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed), and then into CLAMP's work, and Dragon Ball, and Gundam, and then all manga/anime in general. But I'm very casual about it now, I haven't read a damn comic book since and I just know most japanese works up to 1997 cuz that's when I quit my hobby due to reduced cash flow. ^^;;

Now, I'm trying to go back to my 6th grade style(albeit much improved of course!)-- (which just looked unique.. it was right when I began to really get good! I gotta find my old stuff...), but I'm focusing more on taking on the American style b/c the big eyes thing is getting a little old.. ^.^;; But I still like the japanese style, it'll be a mix..

damn, sorry for all that.. ^___^;;

Posted by on 12-14-2001 08:50 PM

man, no wonder you draw so much better than me, I've only been drawing for a year

Posted by Orocia Agua on 12-14-2001 09:01 PM

Smile Hee hee..

Practice Practice Practice!! If you see something you like, and you wanna draw like that, than copy it! Mockery is the best form of flattery! You see all that fan art of Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, doncha?

But that's how I got to where I am today.. I saw something that I really wanted to draw, and I tried my best to copy it. And then I'd try to redraw it, but in a different way.. Like take a pic of a girl sitting and redraw it so that she's standing. And art classes don't hurt either, I took a class in 5th grade where the instructor actually inked Marvel comics back when she was younger.. ^__^ and invest in some art books as well, too! Just practice practice practice.

Oh yeah, some of my best drawings take at least 5 hours to finish... such as my Orocia pics! But when you get really good, you'll be able to whip up a simple pic in 5 minutes. I can draw a simple Sailor Moon under 3 minutes or less now. ^_^

Hope that helps!
-------

PS: oh yeah, when I began to draw people, I found it easier to draw females than males. Probably because the lines are smoother on a female while on a male it's more angular. And it took me a while to get children right too.. Practice Practice Practice!! I can't tell you how many times I've ripped the paper I was working on because I erased something so many times because I wanted it to be just right but I couldn't get it right!.. And then the sides of your fingers and hand turn black from all the lead(well, graphite actually) it picked up off the paper..Ugh! the frustration of the novice artist!! ^^;; I still do that, but that's once in a blue moon nowadays. And you'll be so happy on the day you realize you can draw pretty damn good ~_^

Posted by on 12-14-2001 09:12 PM

right now I am in a kind of artistic funk, so I haven't been drawing that much, but I do find that my best drawings are done after an artistic funk

Posted by Scarlet Rosenblade on 12-14-2001 09:13 PM

Like Orocia, I've been drawing most of my life. It started out with the basic "kiddie art" that included stick figure family potraits, etc.... But let's skip all that.

I started drawing anime back in my freshman year after avidly watching Sailor Moon everyday the previous summer. That was over three years ago and since then I've moved on to become obsessed with Fushigi Yuugi, Love Hina, Ayashi no Ceres, Escaflowne, Lain *babbles on forever*

I don't stick to any one style for too long..I like to experiment and discovered new styles. ^_^

And I still can't draw hands to save my life.........

*****
HAHAHAHA!!! Yes!! How well I know about black hands!

Speaking of my Eva stuff... I found a really nice Eva concept art book (Groundwork of Evangelion Vol. 1) at the book section of a mall in Hiroshima. I also found the Eva movies, but on Laserdisc.

I also own a J-pop CD. And I'm not ashamed. Much.

Yay! Another artista! *welcomes you with flowers and mounds of drawing paper* Share share share your work with us!! *cheesy smile* I love to see other's work!

As for me, I am pitifully stuck in a rut. I can't draw. T_T *wails silently in agony in her mind* Oh God! how I wish I could just be happy drawing all the beautiful sceneries and people and things and ideas in my mind but they just won't come out! It's so damn frustrating! It's DEPRESSING! I'm an obsessive doodler, and I'm obsessive about drawing things and making things beautiful and horrifying appear out of nothing on paper from the dreams of my super-imaginative mind, and I feel as if my hands have been chopped off.

God, it's torture, and I'm not lying when I say I've cried in frustration and ripped apart the piece of paper I was working on.

*sigh*

I don't what I did to be cursed for so long... 9_9;? Ah, well. Hopefully it'll pass in the next week because I fucking need to finish a senior project in time. Or I may be beheaded by shame and embarrassment and the scorn of the people who trusted me to finish my self-proposed project on time *kicks herself HARD in the ass a thousand times*

Sorry! *slight embarrassment from her lamentation* May the blessings rain upon you! *throws more flowers at ya*

If you need images scanned, and you can't find a friend to do it, there is Kinkos, or if you need REAL quality, and have money to burn, a service bureau. (Yes, I spent too much time in high school at print shops and the web press at the QC Times.)

But you can get a passable USB scanner for around $100 these days, which is affordable enough.

Full disclosure -- I have hardly touched a flatbed scanner in a year or so. Most of my recent scanning experience has come from negative scanners, Nikon to be precise. The one I use at work costs... I want to say two grand, but I have no clue. I don't pay for it.

Ok, some specifics for those curious. A low-end Umax -- and I've purchased Umax before, as well as used them in a semi-professional production environment -- can be had for under $50.

http://zdnetshopper.cnet.com/shopping/resellers/0-11210-1411-2096664.html

When scanning line art, my recomendations are:
* Scan greyscale with at least 16 bits per pixel.
* Turn off all the automated correction features. (ALWAYS do that.)
* Use levels on Photoshop to make the paper look crisp white instead of muddy grey, and then use a feathered eraser and a clone stamp to fix minor imperfections.

As for DPI... scan at 150 and reduce to 72 after you've finished correcting the image. You should always scan at roughly twice your output size, correct the image, and then reduce.

Now, if you don't have Photoshop, there are a gazillion alternatives available -- there's a field-stripped version of Photoshop that comes bundled with a lot of flatbeds, as well as Microsoft Picture-It and any other number of family-friendly software. But Paint Shop Pro, which is shareware, is far less insulting to your intelligence than any low-rent software other than Photoshop Essentials.

The problem with Photoshop, other than price -- which many people have found ways to circumvent, mind you -- is the learning curve, which is amazingly steep. The problem with Photoshop is that it's designed for artists, photographers, special effects technicians, web page technician, and print media desingers (which is where I fit) all at once. But once it's mastered you're gravy.

Anyone who wants to hear more, drop me a carrier pidgeon message and I'll be happy to help.

I'm an avid gamer and I spend a good deal of my time playing RPGs and other fantasy based games, such as the PC game Might and Magic 7. That has kinda inspired some of the writing I do here. Do you play video games? Or just have an over-active imagination? I'm interested in hearing your source of inspiration or whatever else.

I used to play fantasy and scifi war games, card games and roleplayers. ( I used to LARP a bit too).

I also play rugby, used to play basketball but its shite in Ireland.

I spend more time than should on the playstation and computer and I eat lots.

I have a small obsession with old sierra games.

Thats all i care to tell.

Question Free time...

Sometimes this term seems so strange...

Well, I spend a good deal of time working as a biomedical engineer. I'd be here more often were it not for my responsibilities to the profession...

I have played D&D most of my life, and some other individuals on the boards (namely K. Emerald, K. Onyx, and K. Top-ass) have participated in a three year campaign that continues to this day... Much of me is devoted to developing this story that we have committed so much of our time together creating.

I also play violin in a band, but, most of the time, my band screws me over (like losing my amp and refusing to reimburse me).

I spend another huge portion of my time loving my girlfriend. To me, it's a very important comittment.

And, when Keiru Top-ass can convince me, I also like to frizbee golf.

Other things: painting miniatures, ROLLERBLADING, paintball, ghost-hunting, eating at Hogmallet's Inn, playing Diablo II and Baldur's Gate II...

A lot of my free time is devoted to this site, and I love every second I sink into it.

Diablo 2 is another of my vices.. poor Vholm, may the barbarian spirits (and voice) guide his soul to the Arreat Summit.

Class eats my time too, but none eat more of my time than latin 4..

*thinks* Yeah, D&D is fun, when I can get into it. And, I've always had a personal connection to Mage: The Ascension as well. Vampire rules too.

And then there's the occational party night when all of my homeyz get together and drizzidrink our sizziselfes into issaoblivion.

Well, that about it, *pours Long Island Ice Teas for everyone* Bottoms Up!!!

In my free-time I enjoy committing myself to my theater and performing in musicals. I also enjoy drawing and watching anime.

Which Reminds Me...

I also devote alot of time to the artes of a Thespian (which also reminds me of my favorite video game line: "Thesbian?! I thought only girls could be thesbians?"(Swordsman Kyle in Lunar, Silver Star Story, after being congratulated on his acting by long time girlfriend on and off, the Priestess Jessica)), Plays and Musicals and all those. Under my belt, I've got all the degrading Elementary/Middle School Plays, The Policeman, Freddie, Karl, the only base in all the songs, Maude, and pretty much all the other non-lead male roles in Bye Bye Birdie, I forget who in Wild West Women, and am currently working on the role of "Mr. March" in Little Women.

Video games currently suck up alot of my time- I own a library of RPG's larger than any normal person should have. Current works are Final Fantasy X, Onimusha, and Dark Cloud.

And of course, there's Rune Aeterna...

Note: Thanks to Topaz for pointing out my error. The line by Kyle was spelled that way, so..

Heh...yeah I forgot to mention the site. I practically haunt the forums. ^^;

Anyway, musicals I have under my belt include The Music Man (teen dancer), Bye Bye Birdie(another teen dancer with solos and a few lines), The Mikado (Pitti Sing), Oklahoma (Giggling Gertie), and I'm currently rehearsing for HMS Pinafore and in that I'm a relative of Sir Joseph. (Basically ensemble)

Evil Free Time

Free time? What's that? *looks around kind of clueless for a moment then grins*

Free time... h'mm. Okay, here's generally what I ca nbe found doing in my free time...

Reading
Writing
Singing
Writing
Drawing
Writing
Playing (musical instruments, i mean)
Writing
Listening to music
Writing
Image Editing
Writing
HTML Coding/Webpage Designing
Writing
Chatting (RPG)
Writing
Writing
Writing...

*eg*

I'm all over the MB's, namely, Delphi, in my free time. I run two games, one of which is quite a handful, LOL.

This board, although I'm currently (in another window, lol, multitasker that I am) working on the writeup for something for this board... but I do have to say, I am very relieved to find a board where flames do not abound, and disagreements between players are not all over the place... Delphi is sometimes rife with such things, and it is very refreshing to see that flames/arguments do not always go hand in hand with players.

Thesbian...?

Just so you know, it's thespian. I'm not sure if you were joking or not.

Nonetheless, in my free time, I like to hang out with my friends, play disc golf, and just relax. My schoolin' also takes a small as possible role in my life, even though my major is theatre. Now you'd think I'd be happy in my classes, but the U of Iowa doesn't really let me take theatre classes... strange, no? Anyway, in a few weeks I'm auditioning in St. Louis for Midwest Summerstock, so hopefully I'll get a job acting over break. Needless to say, I've been devoting a good deal of time getting my monologue down... I REALLY don't want to end up in a factory this summer.

Cool Same here.........

I myself am a big fan of cinema. I have a thing about being on top of every new movie that comes out. I pride myself on my knowledge of many movies.

Fun....hmmmmm

Well I write song lyrics and I practice Sikaran (A form of martial arts).

I do sports like Basketball and Football, but not for any teams or anything, just play them with friends.

Skiing is also up there, need something to do during the winter season.

Angry

Sex??? Grrrr... my g/f lives 100 miles away. *sheds a single tear for Silver* Ok, since sex is out I'm going to go with anything that involves me doing nothing. I like listening to music, working on web design, and watching movies. And if there's a rave nearby, I'll actually get off my *** and do something. I like raves, I like them gooooood!

*raises an eyebrow*

A party boy, huh? Very nice!

*evil grin*

Raves are fun... at least until the man shows up...

Sex? Feh. I guess I'm one of the few males not interested in sex on any level. (If you don't beleive me, ask Orocia about one of our more interesting conversations.)

At any rate.. another thing I pass my time on is set construction for upcoming plays. The pay sucks (my high school's Theater class pays nothing but good grades, but the college gives minimum wage to non-college students like myself), but it's something to do while I wait to actually be in the play. Speaking of which, Little Women starts tomorrow. Wish me luck!

At least your significant other is within a reasonable driving distance, Onyx. *sulks*

Atleast you -have- a significant other, Ruby.

Not that I'm looking for one, but don't look a gift lover on the map.

*detects a hint of sarcasm* No need to be facetious Onyx.

But yes, distance sucks. T_T
