Treatise on the nomads of farai

Bara Chinder

OOC: my carachter is a nomad and no-one seems to pay any attention to the nomads in farai. Im gonna make this as flexible as possible so I wont interfere with any of the history of the cities in farai.

IC: This is the hierarchy, structure and a small amount of the history of the nomads in farai.

TRIBES

There are a few tribes of nomads in farai. But for our purposes here I shall refer only to the most largest ones. There are a few smaller splinter tribes but most are settled now in cities.

Each tribe will have some representitive (or group) who councils with the chiefs on affairs of the tribe.

The tribe is devided into clans, small groups of families bound together. The clan is ruled by a chieftan and which ever holy man appropriate to the tribe. In each clan the chieftan answers to a head of the clan. This will be the head of the biggest clan and the other chieftans will usually respect his authority. However in cases where this is not so, civil wars, on a clan to clan scale can ensue.

Below the chieftan of a clan there are braves (the most proven warriors and tradesmen,) sons (the sons of the chieftan, and potential heirs to his seat), and the chieftans wife who is considered to be in charge of the women and their roles. (note: the wifes role is diffrent in an obvious case below.)

Each tribe will more or less inhabit a certain area of farai with the exception of the laimh dearag who have spread across the country.

Clans are distinguishable by their distinct tatoos and markings. Tribes also have styles of tatoos but there are ethnic differances.

Below is a description of the largest clans.

1. The Laimh dearag. (law-ve jar-ag)

These are a strong tribe originating in the north. Although they come from the north they can be found throughout farai. The head of the Laimh dearag is one lua who is the chieftan of the largest clan in the tribe the boru's. As head of the tribe his only actions in excess of that of chieftan is to reprasent the laimh dearag at the council of free peoples on farai (the government of farai mentioned in a seprate treatise).

The laimh are the most wide spread and one of the largest tribes of the farai. The also enjoy the luxuary of being the best understood and best related of the nomad tribes. There is a large group of laimh clans around rysend. travelling the lands which used to belong to another tribe who have more or less completly integrated with the city.

The Laimh also have a great rappor with other Tribesy despite their wisdom and freindly nature they are still frowned upon as heathens by balanum. This is quite unfounded as they are one of the few creator fearing tribes in existance.

2. The slibhfir (sleev-fir)

The slibhfir are from the east of the country and are from living in the foothills of the hollow crags, hardened fighters by nature.

This tribe are chaotic at best they are head strong pagans but are worthy dependable fighters. They are frenziable when they go to war and fight well from horseback as they live life on te move.

The slibhfir make their living off and live off their rough brush farms where they farm tuburs and shrubs of sorts.
They are also renowned for their herbal remidies for cuts and infections.

To understand the the slibhfir is to understand a life under the threat of the evil in the mountains, which goes on because there is no other life. They prefer not to send one leader to the council, when theysend one atall. Their leader is not actually a chieftan but a much respected queen of sorts. She is a 18 stone mammoth of a woman whos size is only matched by her formidity in battle. She has taken over the chieftans role in her clan and indeed the clan is now named after her. Her title is riann ui riann, and she enjoys the utmost respect from the rest of her tribe.

The slibhfir do not have good relations with other tribes but when convinced will fight alongside them for the good of their tribe.

3. The Capallan
The horse men of the central plains of farai raise the best horses in asheri. they are striong swift and nimble and no-one handles them (or fights from them) better than the capallan. In battle the cappalan are fond of spears and long handled, light scimitar like swords.

They are peaceful wanderers who have found a new life and living training selling and breeding horses. Indeed the Capallan horse races are a spectacle to be seen,as the horses that they will not sell are displayed in ferain and parvini for revellers and gamblers to see.

The Capallan have no one leader but whichever of the chieftans they can spare in the time of a council. they keep them self to them selves in that respect but always have their ear to the ground. spending so much time near the main roads they hear a lot from the villages and cities and are well respected by the settled farai.

Their religious belief is even based around horses believing in two gods, the tamer ( A creator like figure) and the wild horse (a gaia like spirit of the earth.)

the capallan are also one of the larger of the tribes.

4.The fuairbionn
The fuair bionn are a group of clans from the south they live to the south of endaroth and the holow crags spreading partway up the east coast behind the hollow crags.

the fuair are cold, quiet people. They keep away from most councils but will occasonally send a man up to add their say in times of need. Their main trade is agriculturally with endaroth and occasionally into lunis.

They are master herbalists and hunters. They are not generally strong fighters, preferring to lay back, low and shoot their enmies. As a result they are dabhands with bows and crossbows.

The fuairbionn are the only tribe who have any frequency in magic users. While being still extremly rare occasionally learned fuair will travel into lunis and rarer onto dedication. Being a pagan tribe however this usually means a sad good bye to the tribe.

The fuairbionn have extremly bad relations with the other major tribes and mots of the others too.

Others
There are as I said before many tribes in farai.
They reach allm across the state. In settled cities they tend to be descriminated against but in places like Ferain they are celebrated for their diversity.

Rysend has the most harmonius relations of Nomads and settled people where the population is that of craftsmen and nomad tradesmen living together.

There are even nomads in and around soulwood but they are of small tribes and little is known of them.

Traditions.
Most nomad tribes denote rank achievements and standings with their tatoos. The tatoos will tell alot about a nomad.

For example the croisbui (yellow cross) which is a denotation of a cowardly act or other such act worthy of the shame of the clan.

Braves will have tattos (ooc: similar to those of the maoris in new zealand) on their faces.

Shoulder and arm tatoos will generallydenote tribe and clan.

The nation
Old lore tells of a time when the tribes came together to fight a great battle for the good of the whole nation of nomads. The tribes have grown apart since then but the laimh dearag still believe that a time such as this could come. Besides the council there is no real contact between the tribes. This would require a concerted effort to bring the heads of the tribes together.

Priests
Certain holymen, shamen or priests claim to have psycic or clairvoyant powers. They are sort of advisors to the leaders and are listened to by all the tribesmen.
There is some founding in their claims but they are seldom listend to by outsiders. There is a suggestion that the creatorfearing priests have been granted certain limited psycic powers.

I hope this is some help.

OOC: To any Keiru Emerald or Silver get straight on to me if there is a problem with any of this and ill sort it out. Just let me know.

This will certainly have it's place on the new mainpage!
